A lot of factors go into
successfully growing plants
hydroponically, but good,
consistent water quality is
essential. The pH levels and
salt content of the raw water
affects the absorption of certain
nutrients by the roots. High pH levels in the water may hinder absorption of some plant
nutrients and low pH levels may permit excessive absorption of some nutrients leading to
toxic levels of those elements. The conductivity of good quality raw water should be below
0.5 mS/cm and can be measured using the YSI EC300. This is very important for hydroponically
grown tomatoes because they typically require nutrient solutions in two or three levels for
various stages of growth. As these nutrient needs change it is important for the plants
to be able to optimally use the available nutrients. Without the proper pH and salinity
ranges, the plants, and ultimately the crop itself, will suffer from not enough or too much
nutrient uptake.
