On December 26th, 2004 one
of the worst natural disasters
occurred in Banda Aceh,
Indonesia. After the coastal
waters receded, they came back
on shore with a vengeance
causing massive devastation to
the local homes and businesses
while touching the lives of those throughout the world. YSI quickly went into action and partnered with the World Aquaculture Society to raise money and equipment for local fish farmers but there was a more immediate need - fresh drinking water. Resource Development International-Cambodia, in cooperation with Buffalo State University, acquired 10 YSI EC300 instruments for use in the area drinking water wells. Salt water intrusion can easily ruin a drinking water well and RDIC began testing wells in the area immediately using the EC300s to determine conductivity and salinity values. Good wells and bad wells were quickly identified so fresh water was available to the locals and relief workers alike. Even though it will take a long time for the region to return to life pre-tsunami, they can rest assured the most basic need - clean water - is available.
